I am grinding all the ship lines to level 5 and have had some trouble with damage outputs of some ships.
Im an above average player, not bad but not great, and have a reasonable idea how to play.
So I wanted to work out why I cant get as high damage games in Gun based ships as consistantly as in Torpedo based ships.
This made me look into how the damage is delivered and what affects it.
Guns can be described as “point damage”
1. You have aim left/right aswell as aim near and far. The rounds are launched and can hit what ever is in the target area only. Everything before and after this point of impact is insignificant.
So aiming slightly too high or too low on a stationary ship can see all the rounds miss and damage potential wasted.
2. Guns suffer from dispersion. When you fire the rounds dont always land where you want.
So even with perfect aim and lead on a target you can see the damage potential wasted.
I have launched a bunch of rounds at a DD and the center of the impact sites would on been on the ship but the rounds landed left and right, before and after him. He got away without a scratch yet the aim was true.
3. Guns are affected by rng and armour.
When a round impacts a target it can do various things like bounce, over pen or deal damage.
Your ammo damage in ships details screen is not what you consistantly see.
So a round with ~1200 damage makes contact with the enemy ship and could deal 0,~250,~500 ,~1200 or ~2400 for a citadel.
I have hit some ships fith most of the main guns only to see them laugh it off then close the distance and destroy me with torpedoes.
4. In one minute you could fire main guns three times. If your aim is true, With above factors you can have high damage or very little damage. There is generally a large varience of damage.
Torpedoes can be desribed as “moving point damage”
1. Torpedoes still need to be aimed correctly but once launched they impact anything in their path. So aiming at one ship can still see you hit another that is in the torpedoes path.
2. Torpedoes follow a set path with set dispersion between each. When you aim at a stationary target you will hit them. You can also use the know dispersion to hit two target with one salvo of torpedoes.
3. Torpedoes dont suffer from Rng. When a torpedo hits its target, it will do damage. There are things the target ship can do to help reduce damage but he will be damaged.
4. In one minte you can fire a bunch of torpedoes. If your aim is true then you will consistantly do larger amounts of damage.
While there are many other factors such as player skill, the ship and the ships accuracy but torpedoes will offer the higher and more consistant damage per successful hit.
You can see why the lower tiers are generally dominated by ships with torpedoes, even the less skilled players have the potential to do big damage.
