After 50 battles I’m still not sure about the Okhotnik. It seems there’s no respectable way to play it - my tactic consists of bailing for the frontline as fast as I can while attempting to stay hidden. Then I yolo the nearest big target I can find... I can usually get in a few volley of torps and set a few fires before being taken out. But it’s rare that I last long. I’ve tried being a defender and an interceptor but the short range on the torps and guns significantly restricts your ability to do that. Basically all you can do in this ship is ambush or yolo people. My average damage is 20k, which is lower than any other premium I have except the Mikasa. I’ve had a few killer games in it (80k damage is my record), and plenty of good games, but also many disappointing ones. It seems like it’s got so much going for it, but in reality I think it’s an underperformer. Just a minor buff might make it more viable - like making the torps go an extra couple of hundred meters, or giving it some AA (in game it doesn’t appear to have any). Anyone else got any thoughts on it?

Can’t really play it like a CL with 7km gun range. Even tier 3-4 cruisers have several kilometres more reach. It’s a brawler.

I’ve got a pretty good sytem going. I may actually make a second review vid of this one because the more I play the more I’m surprised by what I’ve been able to get away with. Here is what I’m currently doing. I rush forward (not using speed boost) once I get to where I think I will be in gun range I turn broadside and slow down. I try to vary my speed between full and 1/2 once I’m detected but opponents are not. If/once opponents are detected (the ones close by) I’ll leave my speed to 1/2 for a bit to draw some fire and maybe some torps. Then I will speed up and turn around and rush away from the fight while incoming fire and torps try to hit me. The Okhotnik is so narrow that with your stern facing the incoming fire and using speed boost to clear the area you are a tough target and will likely not get hit and torps will pass safely to each side by the time they catch up to you. Your team mates by this time should have made contact themselves with the reds that were firing at you but the red torp capable ships are on reload so your team mates have 1 less thing to worry about for a short time. The red ships won’t be able to chase you through your team mates so they will then start attacking your team. This is where it gets fun. Loop around the battle using islands and team mates for cover. You will be shocked at how close you can safely get to red ships preoccupied with your team mates. Get close, fire torps, back off on the reload stay behind your teams CA’s and/or BB’s and watch for distracted reds and make torp runs as opportunity presents.Shooting the whole time except when trying to attack a distracted ship. Dont shoot at them they will pay attention to you. Always approach head on for the final bit of the torp run. Make yourself as small and fast a target as possible bots can still hit you reliably but most people can’t. I was at first being much less agressive on the torp side of gameplay and that was working too, I just found it boring. My kill ratio has gone down so has the win rate slightly that means I’m dying more often than when I played more conservatively like in my review but its way more fun the way I’m playing it now.
That all being said if the devs were to give her a bit more range on the guns, say out to 10km she’d be more effective and versatile than she is now. In fact if the devs gave her the same range as the Krasny but keep the slower reload and the lower fire chance the Okhotnik could be played more simply as a CL however she would lose some of her uniquenes so I’m not sure how I’d feel about that yet.
The way ZipZip mentions is similar to what i do. Its and ambush ship or battleship protector.
I found the guns do not fully rotate across the front and reduces rate or fire if your maneuvering alot. It needs this fixed first.
Then it needs a review for increased gun range OR torpedo range. Not much but the current ranges are just too short and see you outclassed by many ships.

I think the main issue is that she’s over tiered. Neither her guns nor torpedoes are capable of dealing with any Tier VI beyond the dumbest of bots. The ship just flat lacks the speed, range and mobility to compete.
I assume that because of the sheer number of weapons she was made a Tier V? And while Stalin was fond of the “Quantity has a quality all its own” concept, that certainly doesn’t apply here.
