This Wednesday, hackers hacked, among many others, the Twitter accounts of billionaires Bill Gates and Elon Musk and former US President Barack Obama for a scam that offered payments with Bitcoin.
In addition to those of Gates, Musk and Obama, the accounts of the virtual Democratic candidate for the White House, Joe Biden, were also hacked; from the owner of Amazon, Jeff Bezos; by artist Kanye West; or the companies Uber and Apple.
The hackers posted similar messages offering to double the money users deposited in Bitcoin to a virtual cryptocurrency wallet.
"I'm giving back to the community! All Bitcoin entered Country Email List into the following address will be returned duplicates! If you send $1,000, I'll send you $2,000 back. I'll only do it for 30 minutes," stated a message on Biden's account.
A similar message on Bezos' account promised to distribute $50 million, while Uber pledged $100."Due to COVID-19, we are returning $10 million in Bitcoin. All payments sent to our address will be returned doubled."", stated the message in the account of the shared transportation company.
Although most of the messages were quickly deleted, according to The New York Times, at least 300 people fell for the scam, earning more than $100,000 between them.
Twitter acknowledged the breach in its security system and said it was investigating it."We are aware of the security incident that has impacted Twitter accounts. We are investigating and taking steps to resolve it," the social network said in a message on a corporate account.
On Musk's account, for example, the hackers managed to publish several messages over a period of one hour as they were deleted.
The hack was a demonstration of force by the hackers and its consequences could have been greater given the importance of the affected accounts if its authors had had other objectives beyond asking for money for Bitcoin.
